Child Rights

Program : Break the silencep

Collaboration : HCL Foundation

Duration: 2014 -2018

Activities : We stared an initiative with the support of HCL Foundation in 100 school of Lucknow city called Break the silence to address Child sexual abuse.Child sexual abuse constitutes a violation of the most basic rights of children. The protection of children from sexual abuse, keeping them happy, healthy and safe from harm - is fundamental to the success of every society. In this regard school plays a crucial role by providing information & knowledge, skills and values to them. So keeping of the view of all these factors the end goal of this initiative is to ensure that when children are in need of protection they-get the help they need when they need it, are listened to, understood and respected and benefit from meaningful action to minimize harm. The objective of this initiative is to impart the basic information & knowledge about child sexual abuse to children & staff, inform them about the services for child sexual abuse and constitute a committee in school to address child sexual abuse.

 

Program : Street Contact Points

Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow NGOs Network for Street & Working Children. Department of Social Welfare, Govt. of UP.

Duration: 1994 -1998

Activities : The street contact points for the street & working children ran for four consecutive years. The program primarily aimed at extending educational, recreational & counseling services to the aforementioned target group.

 

Program : Comback Childhood

Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow

Duration: 2000 -2002

Activities : The project aimed to reach, interact and mainstream the street & working children in and around the railway station in Lucknow by extending to them the basic facilities like health, education, recreation and night shelter. For this purpose Situational Analysis of 300 children were conducted and Stakeholders Sensitization Drive for Parent, Employers, Vendors, Coolies, Taxi Drivers, Rick. Pullers, NR/NER Staff, Police Personnel was also launched. Also a team of peer group educators was developed based on the concept of Child to Child approach to run 4 street contact points of approx. 450-475 street & working children.

 

Program : Childline

Collaboration : Govt. of India Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment

Duration: 2001 -2003

Activities : Child line was a national, 24 hour emergency outreach service, CHILD LINE was a free phone helpline for children in need of care and protection.Childline aimed to reach out to the most marginalized children between the age group of 0-18 years, and provides interventions of shelter,medical,repatriation,rescue,death related,sponsorships,emotional support and guidance. Under this project 2764 children were directly benefited.

 

Program : NCLP

Collaboration : State Labor Department

Duration: 2005 -2011

Activities : This program aimed at the working children engaged in hazardous labor. In the Babu Banarsidas ward of Lucknow a education center cum drop-in center is being providing these working children the basic acilities as meal, basic education and vocational trainings. The primary objective is to provide them with a safe & secure future.

 

Program : Protection of child rights in the metal ware industry of Moradabad City.

Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow

Duration: 2009 -2012

Activities : The program aims to aware and built the capacities of stakeholders and duty bearers for the promotion of child rights and the protection of children against violence, exploitation, and abuse and also link the children to quality education. It also aims to socially empowered the women to act as agents for child rights.

Community Organization

Collaboration : District Urban Development Agency, Lucknow.

Duration: 1998 -1999

Activities : Ankur worked as partners of State Urban Development Agency (Suda) & District Urban Development Agency (DUDA), Lucknow for the implementation of the National Slum Development Programme (NSDP) and Swarna Jayanti Shahri Rozgar Yojna (SJSRY). The foremost task for Ankur was to help organize women volunteers from the slums of Lucknow City in the three-tier framework as suggested by the aforementioned programmes. Main tasks accomplished by Ankur in the field of community organization, were:

    Program : HCL UDAY Digital Literacy Program

    Activities : Digital Literacy & Life Skill Program is a joint effort of HCL Foundation and Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir. Digital Literacy and Life Skill Program targeting 8000 girls and 500 women for enabling them access a wealth of information and knowledge by introduction to Computer, Internet, Search engines, and Life skill and confidence building. In this programme we are committed to enthusing, energizing and enabling girls and women through equipping them with the right skills, information, and resources to advance personally and professionally.

     

    Program : Digital Literacy & Life Skill Program

    Duration: 2015 - 2018

    Activities : Digital Literacy & Life Skill Program is a joint effort of HCL Foundation and Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir. Digital Literacy and Life Skill Program targeting 3800 girls and 200 women for enabling them access a wealth of information and knowledge by introduction to Computer, Internet, Search engines, and Life skill and confidence building. In this programme we are committed to enthusing, energizing and enabling girls and women through equipping them with the right skills, information, and resources to advance personally and professionally. This unique initiative works with one simple underlying theme – empowered women will empower other women! This programme has the two subcategories.

     

    Program : Inclusive Education Program

    Collaboration : Institutional Excellence Forum (IEF)

    Duration: 2014 - 2015

    Activities : Inclusive Education Program which is a joint effort of Institutional Excellence Forum and Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir with the ambition to make the young generation more aware about their career in Uttar Pradesh. The main objective of bringing this program in action is to make the students aware of their hidden talents and interests and guide them in setting up their career goals.The Program targeting 240 schools in 15 cities of Uttar Pradesh. The program also aims to award scholarships to students who are willing to pursue their dreams in non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields of study. In this programme we will also set-up of Career Centers at every hub of 10 schools

     

    Program ::Girl child primary education project in Mirzapur

    Collaboration :: IIMPACT, Gurgaon

    Duration: 2013 - 2018

    Activities : Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir has recently initiated an intervention in Mirzapur district for promotion of primary education amongst the out of school girls, especially those who have never been to the schools. The project started in partnership with IIMPACT (an initiative by IIM alumni) aims at reaching out to 900 underprivileged girls who have never been to schools because of the prevailing village norms & customs, or who traditionally have no access to schooling, in 30 villages under the including the tribal belt of Mirzapur

     

    Program : Janshala

    Collaboration : Directorate of Basic Education.

    Duration: 2002 - 2003

    Activities : The project aims at identifying out of school children and facilitating their enrollment in schools. For this purpose a 3 months bridge course and 6 months retention support program is being carried out in the education ward of Ganeshganj in Lucknow city. Ankur at present is running 50-bridge course center.

     

    Program : Hamari Shala

    Collaboration : Catholic Relief Services.

    Duration: 2004 - 2010

    Activities : The objective of this program is to ensure primary education to every child in the project area. For this purpose we are trying to main stream the non school going & drop out children, specially adolescent girls of 6 to 14 years. In this project 2400 children are at target at 60 centers. For this purpose a 24 months bridge course is being carried out in the 33 slums of 9 municipal wards of Lucknow city.

    Environmental Health

    Program : Environmental Health Programme

    Collaboration : Department for International Development, U.K. London School For Hygiene & Tropical Medicines, U.K. Urban Development Department, Govt. of U.P. Hindustan Lever Limited

    Duration: 1996 -1997 & 1998 -1999

    Activities : Study On Diarrhoea & Hygiene in Lucknow Slums

    This study was conducted under the aegis of Gomti River Pollution Control Project, between January and July'1996 by Ankur. The study, Diarrhoea & Hygiene in Lucknow Slums, conducted in low income group pockets of Lucknow, aimed at identifying hygiene practices of the slum dwellers which put them at risk of diarrhoeal incidences.

    Piloting For Behavioral Changes

    Based on the learning of the research phase, an action plan was developed and implemented between July'1996 and July'1997. The yearlong programme intended to bring about the behavioral changes with the help of a number of communication activities conducted through various communications channels.

    Study On Hygiene Motivation in Netherlands & India

    Ankur collaborated with London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK and Hindustan Lever Limited, India to study the socio-cultural factors that determine the attitude towards hygiene issues between July and September'1998. This comparative study involved interviews, questionnaires and participant observation in both urban and rural areas of Lucknow and Netherlands. The study gives new insights into the role of culture in attitude towards hygiene.

    HIV/AIDS

    Program : RACHANA

    Collaboration : CARE India

    Duration: 2002 - 2007

    Activities : The program covers 10 ICDS blocks of Lucknow district, in which 2 are urban and 8 are rural blocks. . Main objective of this program is to strengthen the sectors with the support of Need based capacity building and on-job hand holding. The program has a specific goal to bring sustainable improvements in the behaviors regarding health & nutrition. We are interacting with the Integrated Child Development Scheme-ICDS and District Health Department to gain the program objectives.

     

    Program : Reducing Vulnerability amongst Migrant

    Collaboration : NACO & CARE- India

    Duration: 2008

    Activities : REVAMP is a targeted intervention for migrants. The objective of this program is to reduce vulnerability & risk of HIV/AIDS in the targeted population, by providing them awareness & services in urban Lucknow. The program is catering 5000 migrants after the mapping & risk analysis.

    Housing And Tenure Rights

    Program :Urban Housing: Innovations in Community Sensitization

  • Oxfam (India) Trust initiated an urban poverty study in Lucknow City with the help of Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir to work in collaboration through their network of community workers on issues related to land tenure and housing rights. First phase of the program primarily comprised of finalization of the research fellows, training, identification of bastis and finally conducting PLA in them vis a vis housing rights and land tenant ship. In the second phase of work which primarily tries to find out more intricate living conditions of the people residing in these bastis as landlords, tenants and owners.

    Micro Finance And Credit

    Program : Thrift & Credit Societies

    Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow State Urban Development Agency, Govt. of UP District Urban Development Agency, Lucknow District Urban Development Agency, Unnao

    Duration: 1998 -2002

    Activities : Ankur has been helping women set up thrift & credit societies through their meager savings at the micro (basti/locality) level, offering them a cheap credit source for consumption needs as also for self employment in due course. As of now, 6 Thrift & credit societies in Lucknow (urban & rural) supported by Uttar Pradesh Export Corporation (UPEC) and 13 in Unnao (city), supported by the District Urban Development Agency, Unnao are being run under the guidance of Ankur. 100 such groups are working in poorest of poor pockets of Lucknow City. Formation of the groups, training of executives and proper monitoring & linkages of these groups with banks are the main feature of the programme.

    Poverty Alleviation

    Program : Samaveshi Sheher ( Inclusive Cities)

    Collaboration :Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS)

    Duration: 2015 - On going

    Activities : Samaveshi Sheher (Inclusive Cities) is a new initiative of Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir supported by Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) in Lucknow city. The key focus of this three year initiative is on residential vulnerability, though emphasis also remains on addressing social and occupational vulnerabilities. The initiative is weaved around the philosophy that cities must promote for all its residents, equal access to housing facilities, civic amenities, services and opportunities for leading a life of dignity. A large segment of the city’s population comprises of informal sector workers who contribute to the economic growth process of the city. But unfortunately they are unable to claim the city’s resources that are essential for living with dignity. A poor worker city will also have mechanisms for social protection, strong compliance of labour laws, working conditions, social security and scope of enhancing skills and employment prospects.The aim of the initiative is to enhance the quality of life of the urban poor residents and informal sector workers especially women domestic workers by strengthening their identity as residents and workers, facilitating democratic participation in urban governance, livelihood enhancement and advocating their concerns along with other stakeholders.

     

    Reproductive And Child Health

    Program : TARANG project

    Collaboration : Shayog and Ford Foundation

    Activities : The TARANG project facilitates collective action for adolescent girl’s health and rights. It enhances youth participation in the implementation, monitoring and advocacy around the SABLA scheme. TRANG project facilities an enabling environment by

  • Raising local awareness about the health and rights of young women among rural communities, local administrators and officials.
  • Providing direct technical support and capacity building of local facilitators and youth campaigners.
  • Increasing the knowledge and facilitating self-empowerment and development of adolescent girls regarding their health and human rights.

    Program : Community Based Disease Surveillance

    Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow

    Duration: 2000 - 2002

    Activities : This is an ongoing program being implemented in all 12 CDS being covered by Ankur. The program aims at improving the maternal and child health status of the community by capacity building of the community and establishing linkages with the existing government facilities. The ongoing UNICEF supported program has following components, which we have successfully accomplished:

    Program : Community Based Health Initiative

    Collaboration : Government of India

    Duration: 2000 - 2004

    Activities : The project area for this program is the urban villages of Gomiti Nagar, Rafi Ahmad Kidwai and Rajiv Gandhi ward and seven villages of Mall Block of Lucknow. The project aims at improving the reproductive and child health status in the community. The activities undertaken under this project were a baseline survey, training and capacity building of community volunteers formation of adolescent groups, training of adolescents on sexual and reproductive health and establishing linkages with existing services.

    Research And Training

    Program : CORE

    Collaboration : Solidaridad Network Asia Limited

    Duration: 2018-on going

    Activities :This is AYCS new initiative with Solidaridad Asia Network Limited in the state of Gujarat & Rajasthan. This research project has the objective of developing a Code for Responsible Extraction (CORE) for mining industry. This is the first independently auditable global codes for minerals at the extraction site, supported by leading companies as well as civil society organizations. Thus, CORE’s primary objectives are to facilitate the following aspects are compiled within the mining sector:

     

    Enhance compliance with legal requirements and improve governance.

    Improve working conditions and ensure labour rights are protected.

    Provide safe and healthy workplaces.

    Avoid or minimize adverse impacts on the environment.

    Respect the rights and aspirations of affected communities.

     

    Program : Urban Convergent Community Action (CCA)

    Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow State Urban Development Agency, Govt. of UP

    Duration: 1998 - 1999

    Activities : Ankur is proud to be the first organization, associated with the execution of urban CCA in Uttar Pradesh. Conceived by Unicef, it is being piloted in four CDSs of zone 1 in Lucknow City. The community level involvement in this strategy supported by the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) & State Urban Development Agency (Suda) was exemplary, where almost the whole PLA exercise was conducted by the trained RCVs themselves.

     

    Program : Urban Poverty Study

    Collaboration : Oxfam (India) Trust, Lucknow.

    Duration:1999

    Activities : Oxfam (India) Trust undertook the mammoth task of evaluating the extent of urban poverty in 19 major cities of India. In Lucknow, Ankur joined hands with OXFAM in this exercise, and conducted survey based on social mapping to determine the poverty in 28 wards of zone 1. The exercise was to basically assess the following variables:

  • The settlement pattern in the city.
  • Identification of urban low income group areas.
  • Identifying pockets with concentration of floating population.
  • The low income pockets identified as a result of this exercise were marked on the ward wise maps, along with the points of concentration of the floating population and the settlement pattern in the city.

    Program : Slum Mapping of Lucknow City

    Duration:2003

    Activities : The project aimed to prepare a typology of slums of Lucknow and their marking on the city map. Under this project 347 slums were surveyed and marked on Lucknow City map.

     

    Program : Slum relocation & rehabilitation

    Collaboration : Lucknow Development Authority

    Duration:2007

    Activities : This program aimed at the Slum of within 5 Km Radius of Vidhan Shabha in Lucknow.The objective of the program is to collect information about the slums so that they can be either relocated or rehabilitate under JNRUM.

     

    Program : Vocational Training of women.

    Collaboration : UP Mahila Kalyan Nigam

    Duration:2009 - 2012

    Activities : This program is being implemented in Bijnor, Rampur and Moradabad district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It intends to provide vocational training to the women on various trades. Total 450 womens have been trained till date.

     

    Program : Capacity Building of members of Community Development Societies

    Collaboration : SUDA & UP Mahila Kalyan Nigam

    Duration:2009 - 2010

    Activities : The program aims to build the capacities of the President & Secretary of Neighborhood Committees-NHC on various issues as Health , Education, Sanitation & Hygiene, HIV, Communication, etc. The objective is to promote convergence between departments & linkages with community.

     

    Program : Survey of Slums of Lucknow

    Collaboration : DUDA, Lucknow

    Duration: 2010

    Activities : Under the revised guidelines of Swarna Jayanti Shahri Rozgar Yojna (SJSRY) Ankur has been conducting the household survey in slums of Lucknow in Zone 1 and 6.In this survey we are covering approximately 275 slums of 36 municipals ward of Lucknow.

    Water And Sanitation

    Program :HCL UDAY WASH

    Collaboration : HCL Foundation

    Duration: 2017 - ongoing

    Activities : The overall purpose of this intervention is to mobilize the community of slums and schools to adopt good sanitary practices. These slums with poor sanitation facilities are targeted and triggered to construct and use toilets. The intervention carried out in 2 slums to be selected with 900 Households and approx 4500 Beneficiaries. Also 11 government girls inter colleges and upper primary & primary schools were selected for school wash intervention.

     

    Program :School WASH

    Collaboration : HCL Foundation

    Duration: 2017 - 2018

    Activities : Ankur Yuva Chetna Shivir (AYCS) started this intervention in selected 34 government schools & 15 slums of Lucknow city. The purpose of the intervention is to “Promote Hygiene towards creating Open Defecation Free (ODF) Communities.” The intervention has the following specific objectives of Cluster identification, Need Assessment & Resource Mapping of the identified clusters with community participation, Identification of Govt bodies, SMC and other stakeholders & mobilization by conducting workshops, rallies, film shows and other mobilization activities and design and develop communication and training material.

     

    Program : Water Management Program.

    Duration: 1993 - 1994

    Activities : Covered an area of 20 slums for Social mobilization, creation of water management committees comprising of women and technical training of hand pump machines & establishment of community chest.

     

    Program : Rural Sanitary Mart & Environmental Awareness Campaign

    Collaboration : Unicef, Lucknow Panchayti Raj Department, Govt. of UP

    Duration: 1997 - 1998

    Activities : Despite our focus on the urban poor, we continued our rural water and sanitation activities in the villages of the Mall Block. As a pioneering effort Ankur set up a semi commercial venture – a rural sanitary mart in Mall block with support from Unicef to cater to sanitary needs of the rural population in the area. Training & orientation programmes for different target groups like, hand pump mechanics, masons, Panchayat members, Anganwadi workers & health workers, in order to help them act as social motivators in their villages.
